Utilization of electric and electronic equipment

All electric and electronic goods placed on the Latvian market are labelled with an international mark – a container with a cross over it indicating that these goods cannot be disposed of together with household waste, but should be delivered to the waste electric and electronic equipment collection sites.

What to do with waste electric equipment?

In cooperation with regional waste management companies Latvijas Zaļais punkts has developed a network of collection sites for waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) avoiding any damage to the environment. Electric appliances and fluorescent lamps can be delivered to waste electric equipment collection sites while cell phones are also accepted at cell phone merchandises – Latvijas Mobīlais telefons, Tele 2 and Bite client service centres as well as Pērkons un Dēli Ltd. shops. You can find the addresses and working hours on the Map of waste sorting locations.

!!! WEEE collection sites accept waste electric equipment free of charge from individuals. If you prefer that a waste management company collects the equipment from your house, you will have to cover a fee as set by the waste management operator.
In order to ease the population’s access to and simplify the utilization of waste electric goods, waste management organisations hold campaigns and locate travelling collection trucks near apartment houses and courtyards without any extra charge.

!!! Remember: The recyclable waste electric and electronic equipment may not be dismantled, e.g. refrigerators need to have the compressor, TV-sets – the television tube, computers – the mother board, etc. If the electric equipment is disassembled, the waste management operator may charge a fee for utilisation just like for household waste.

Incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs are considered to be harmless to the environment and may be disposed of as household waste.

What is an electric and electronic appliance?

WEEE collection sites accept waste electric and electronic equipment or appliances that run on electric power or batteries free of charge from individuals:
1. Bulk household appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, electric stoves, electric radiator, fans).
2. Small household appliances (vacuum cleaners, irons, coffee machines, grinders, toasters, hairdryer, shavers).
3. Information technology equipment (computers, monitors, printers, electric typewriter, phones, etc.).
4. Consumer equipment (TV-sets, video and audio recorders, CD and record players, radio sets, etc.).
5. Lightning facilities (lamps, light-bulbs, etc.).
6. Electric tools (drills, sewing-machine, saws, etc.).
7. Electric toys, sports and recreational goods.
